REDISCOVERING THE SPIRIT OF ETERNAL LOVE

Theatre is a combination of art forms but when put together, is better than the sum of its parts. It is all about acting, direction, design, dance, music and performance. It is the portrayal of a story, a theme or a social cause. Theatre artists also aim to depict the regional folklore of various parts of the country through plays and skits.

At a time when the Indian folklore and folk literature is in an endangered state, performing arts especially drama is a beautiful way to introduce to the new generations the rich spectrum of history, customs, folk literature, art and architecture of the Indian culture. This is also an effective means to facilitate the revival of our traditions and beliefs.

The students of USHSS made a similar attempt to depict a story based in the land of sand dunes, deserts, beautiful Aravalli ranges and lakes- Rajasthan.
The play, held in the D Block Auditorium, gathered an immense crowd waiting eagerly for the curtains to rise.
The play called ‘Rasrang’ was based on a folk tale from Rajasthan.

The story revolved around a young businessman, scion of a wealthy family, who left in pursuit of making money on the day next to his marriage for five long years, leaving his bride alone in the new household. In his absence, a ghost took on his appearance and entered the bride’s life. He lived in the house, stayed with his family and fell in love with the shy, demure bride. The play depicted the various customs and traditions prevailing in the society of Rajasthan. The plot was filled with romance and mystery and explored the emotion of true love.

After a long period of time, the son of the family, the real husband of the bride returned to his home, only to the bewilderment of all villagers and relatives. The return of her real husband put the girl in a predicament. The villagers ultimately found a solution to this problem which was in the best interest of all.

‘Rasrang’ portrayed the dilemma of a young girl to choose between the undying love of a ghost as against the insensitivity of her husband-between free will and destiny. It depicted the emotional turmoil of a family that failed to recognize their own son and accepted someone else as their own son.
It exhibited the dilemma of a ghost who wanted to be human and yet remain loyal to his love.

‘Rasrang’ depicted the intoxicating colors of Rajasthan, making us wonder how beautiful our lives could be. It was applauded by one and all as the crowd roared in appreciation at the end of the play.
